Choy Lee Fut Research 蔡 李 佛 研究
This site was initially inspired to preserve the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon history, but eventually, I plan to guide this into the direction of focusing on the complete history of the Choy Lee Fut system. My only gain here is knowledge, knowledge of where our gung fu started as well as knowledge of where it's going. I've been researching the history of Choy Lee Fut for over 10 years. I have contacted individuals from all 3 branches of the Choy Lee Fut system, asking questions to learn our history. I've been cooresponding with various members of Hung Sing and Buk Sing to put our history back together. In the process-I've come to ask "why did they say this, when we say that?" and this has made me dig deeper and deeper. One thing for sure, the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon knows their own history, and we should never let others try to tell the world about US, and be completely wrong with THEIR information at the same time. As I will point out, one branch of the CLF style is publising information about us contrary to the history as WE know it. Lately, I've been noticing that certain aspects of the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon is being absorbed into the history according to "ONE SPECIFIC SCHOOL." And, the large amount of disciples of this master are believing his account as if it were gospel, regardless of how many holes his account is filled with. In my opinion, this attempt to steal away any type of glory the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon has is completely wrong. The following is an example of what I mean. -Sifu Frank McCarthy
It is generally thought that there are two schools of
Choy Li Fut: hung sing 洪勝 and bak sing 北勝, and that there are two
representatives of the hung sing school. During the revolution of the
mid-1800s, the Hung Moon 洪門 Party represented all revolutionary
factions, including Choy Li Fut representatives. Choy Li Fut schools had
a secret slogan during these times: "Hung 洪 ying 英 ji 至 sing 聖 ; ying英
hung 雄 wing 永 sing 勝. " This translates as: "heroes of the Hung Party
are superior; heroes always win." Chan Heung's followers adopted two
words of the motto as their secret passwords “hung sing 洪勝” which meant
"Hung Party wins." But, because that was too close to the outlawed Hung
Moon Party name, they changed it to another slogan which sounds the same
as hung sing 鴻勝, but means "goose winning." .........
First, lets look at the 1st sentence :
"It is generally thought that there are two schools of
Choy Li Fut: hung sing 洪勝 and bak sing 北勝, and that there are two
representatives of the hung sing school."
The above statement is completely wrong, for a number of reasons. In the beginning of Choy Lee Fut history were actually two schools. 洪聖 (Great Sage Hung or Xiong Sing-`1836) was connected to Chan Heung. And, 洪勝 (Hung Mun Victory) was the name given to Jeong Ah Yim, founder of the 佛山洪勝館 (the original name-later changed to 佛山鸿胜馆-1851) by the Green Grass Monk.
In 1867, Jeong Yim ( 張炎) returned from Hong Kong where he'd been hiding and running his Hung Sing Kwoon there, and re-opened his Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon. By the date mentioned, Jeong Hung Sing had been promoting his brand of gung fu for "16" years prior to when the one branch of the system claims he's recorded to have existed. The Fut San gov't has Jeong Yim's Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon recorded in 1851, but information found on a certain masters website claims the following....
In 1867, Chan Heung 陳享 sent one of his last batch of
student, Jeong Yim 張炎 to Fut San 佛山 (Foshan) to reopen the school
originally established by Chan Din Yao 陳典尤 and Chan Din Foon 陳典桓 in
1848. Eventually, Jeong Yim became known as the "father of the Hung Sing
School of Choy Li Fut" in Fut San.
Well for one, if Jeong Yim is recorded as establshing his school in 1851, then He and Chan Din Yao 陳典尤 and Chan Din Foon 陳典桓 in 1848 would have had schools open around the same time. As stated, Jeong Yim opened "HIS" Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon 佛山洪勝館 in 1851, which means he was in Choy Lee Fut's bigger picture a decade and a half earlier than when the Chan Family of CLF claims he entered the picture which was 1867.
In 1867, Chan Heung 陳享 sent one of his last batch of
student, Jeong Yim 張炎 to Fut San 佛山 (Foshan)
Another problem with this statement is Jeong Yim 張炎 (1824-1893) was NOT one of the "LAST BATCH" of Chan Heung's students, in fact, Jeong Yim was with Chan Heung in 1836 when we was only 12 years old amongst the first group of students. And since 1836 is when Choy Lee Fut was established by Chan Heung, there's no way Jeong Yim was any part of any last batch of ANYTHING.
Choy Fook's Buddhist monk name was Ching Chou 青草 (Green
Grass). His head had been seriously burned when he took his Buddhist
vows and had healed with ugly scars. This gave him the nickname "Monk
with the Wounded Head 爛頭和尙 ." Armed with that knowledge, Chan Heung
sought out anyone on Lau Fu mountain who could help him find Choy Fook
蔡褔. Finally, he located the monk,
First, and foremost, within the history of the Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon no mention of the Green Grass Monk ever having a scarred head. So, if this piece of information was correct, then why wasn't this ever mentioned within our lineage (Fut San Hung Sing Kwoon)?
Next, the idea of Choy Fook being Monk Ching Cho is wrong. Choy Fook was never said to have been the Abbot of Shaolin, however, the Green Grass Monk is recorded by different sources as being the Abbott of Shaolin, succedding the former Abbott Gee Sim.
One more thing, the Green Grass Monk is connected to the Pak Pai Mountain in Shenjiang, Choy Fook is connected and died on Mt. Lau Fu. Two different monks, two different moutains. One was mentioned to have a scar, one was never mentioned to have a scar. If the opposite were true, why wouldn't Jeong Yim pass that on to his students?
